Meeting people is hard, even when it’s not a pandemic. You never know who they’re going to be once you get past the basic pleasantries. Maybe they’re great! Maybe they… have some peculiar predilections. Like, for example, Steve, the surgeon played by Sebastian Stan in Fresh. He seems so charming! Until he doesn’t.

There’s definitely a lot more going on in Mimi Cave’s Fresh than just a bad date.

Not to spoil anything, but this dude is definitely a cannibal. (I was hoping vampire, but you don’t do a close-up shot of freshly ground meat for vampires. You do that for cannibals.) If the use of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs aptly titled “Heads Will Roll” didn’t clue you in, the poster pretty much spells it out:

Buy the Book

And Then I Woke Up
And Then I Woke Up

And Then I Woke Up

That said, critics have hinted that there’s more going on here than simply what’s suggested by that very expensive severed hand.

The summary is short and sweet:

Fresh follows Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who meets the alluring Steve (Sebastian Stan) at a grocery store and – given her frustration with dating apps – takes a chance and gives him her number. After their first date, Noa is smitten and accepts Steve’s invitation to a romantic weekend getaway. Only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites.

Yeah, I bet he has. Stan’s using all his sneaky charm for this one; thankfully, Noa has an excellent bestie, Molly (Jojo T. Gibbs), to help her keep her head on straight.

Fresh, which is written by Lauryn Kahn, is director Mimi Cave’s feature film debut. Extra horror cred comes from cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski (Hereditary, Midsommar). It premieres on Hulu on March 4th.
